děti speaks to Kimi Juan – the founder of Guapa Skin, about what conscious living means to her.,They also discuss Kim’s initiative, to Stay Plastic Free.
When did your Journey toward sustainability start?
I travel a lot for work and in all these travels, I came to observe that the one thing that bothered me was also the same thing that I was contributing to. The beautiful beaches of mexico, the colorful city of india, and even in many first world countries, plastic trash was evidently seen everywhere. I realized this while holding a plastic bottle in my hand and in that moment I knew the step i needed to take to be better. I immediately took action and slowly changed my life through educating myself and becoming more aware of my actions. Its definitely not an easy journey but its definitely possible and worth the extra effort.
How do you think environmental issues affect our daily lives?
What i learned is that we don’t really see the effects because we’ve learned to become accustomed to a certain way of living but environmental issues have a big effect on our health as humans and the health of our surroundings.
What was the moment that leads to the creation of your #giveashit tagline?
I wanted to share a tagline that was simple, impactful and sort of fun in a way. I think when people say “give a shit” its really simple, the only thing we really need to do to have change is to “give a shit” about the things that matter. I didn’t think it would stick but i’m glad its something people can remember.
Are you ever challenged when friends or family use single-use plastics? How do you approach the conversation?
One thing I always tell people is that I will never force someone to live a certain lifestyle because it never works. I seek to inspire and live by example which is how my family and friends learned of zero waste. They approach me with curiosity and then we have a fun-filled discussion about sustainability and zero waste. I do have to remind people sometimes but never to a point of getting angry/being disappointed. I think we always have to approach sensitive topics with love to have a positive overall outcome.
Lastly, can you tell us about your beautiful brand, Guapa Skin?
Guapa is my little passion project. I’ve always wanted to start a brand that embodied everything I believe in, so I combined clean beauty and sustainability. I decided to start with soaps because its such an underrated product. I wanted people to feel good about taking a bath or a shower without worrying about what they're putting on their skin.
The standards I set for my brand are pretty high in terms of ingredients and packaging. Before I launched my brand, I made sure everything met my expectations and currently I'm still trying to figure out ways to make my brand better in terms of sustainability. Our ethos as a brand focuses on providing plastic-free, cruelty-free, and vegan products and hopefully inspire others brands to do the same. I make all soap batches by hand and manage everything just as a fun little project but I hope to take it further one day.
